The PATH Study conceptual model The PATH Study is based on the Host, Agent, Vector, Environment (HAVE) conceptual model (figure 1) that has been validated in assessing the impact of several tobacco control policy interventions.11 This model is often used to illustrate the transmission of infectious agents, but it has also been used for tobacco studies, including the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Project, which, like the PATH Study, follows nationally representative samples of respondents longitudinally to assess factors associated with tobacco use.12 Host factors are intrinsic to the individual
