The original was discovered in 2001 in Langeid, Norway, buried in grave 8 of the burial ground there, and found alongside an ornate sword. Jan Petersen, the archaeologist, categorised this type of axe head as type M, dating from the second half of the 10th century. The Langeid axe is of a somewhat later period and dates from the first half of the 11th
