Similar oil lamps have been found in the 7th century Sutton Hoo ship grave, in the 8th century Oseberg ship grave, and in Bergen. It may be lit with beeswax just as the originals were, simply by adding small wooden pieces as a wick, or a piece of dried tinder fungus. To extinguish it, place a wooden plank on the tray.
