The pugio was a dagger that Roman legionaries employed in close combat. These types of Roman daggers were not ordinarily worn by civilians, though traders and other travellers did carry a pugio whilst on the road. In this way they could protect themselves against barbarians on the fringes of the Roman Empire or against robbers. The pugio has a wooden
